Mindflayers and Reproductive Horror

They see you as subsentient. The only value they see in you is your reproductive ability. It doesn't matter that it will destroy you. All that matters to them is you have their children. Ceremorphosis is sitting there knowing you will die giving birth to your rapist's child. Just some ponderings from thinking about Alien and Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, I have been thinking about mindflayers a lot recently anyways. I feel like there are a lot of ways to take them but people very rarely take them anywhere beyond the default ways because IP laws stifle.

Getting it to the Table: Vralkast PT1

Image
So this is gonna be a series I am gonna do on my blog going over my process of getting a setting guide ready for my table. I am gonna start with a book I recently got access to, Vralkast: Monstrous Metropolis. This is a setting book that paints a very broad strokes painting of the sea of sorrow, a giant freshwater sea deep in the underdark and the most prized metropolis inside it. It’s a very vibes forward book so I just want to show the process of me translating those vibes into concrete details. I am gonna work my way towards the center of the setting so as such I am gonna work on defining the sea itself and the factions in it. Part 1 General Map and Factions + Miscellany. The main focus of this post is getting a map’s outline to later key. I am gonna be using the supplementary book Field Guide to the Sea of Sorrows. Regions There are five predefined regions: The Glitterdrift – A set of caverns enchanted so all light turns to liquid and drips away. The Gorgon’s Mane – A ...

Dogbrothers for wolves upon the coast, the grand fantasy campaign by Luke Gearing

I’ve been thinking about the Caverns of Thracia recently, and I played in a session of wolves upon the coast. HD 4 AC as Chain Damage as Weapon The hounds of war rarely go hungry. A fragment of the meals begin to slowly bubble in their psyche, soon walking on four legs no longer fits. They become war.

Ave Nox, Ghost-fields Occupations

Image
I am gonna be running a campaign soon based around the Feral Indie Studio megadungeon Ave Nox . I like starting campaigns at level 0 so I made a level 0 occupation table for the campaign. Here's a few details about the peculiarity of the setting that I made up for the broader campaign world that are not like directly part of the module that I wanna talk about. Guns exist, but they are not mundane, every bullet has a demon trapped inside and the gun breaks the seal unleashing the demon inside. This is stolen from a really bad book I read as a teen called the incorruptible, I don't recommend it. The way gun's work is they ignore mundane armor but other wise do like normal amounts of damage. Guns are primarily made by elves. Elves are prone to warlockism due to their longer lives making arcane forces see it as more worth their while. Elven society is often broken up along the lines of patronage; blood elves come from a society that have sworn allegiance to the prime vampir...

I was thinking about spelljammer again and realized I should share my house rules for sphere generators. Here's a PDF for home printing.

Saint Inklethurt's and Brondy Underground Railroad

Troika! Tuesday is here again. Here’s a small little monster. Hidden within the goblin labyrinth of Troika City are many abandoned underground projects. The first underground railroad in the city was that of the Saint Inklethurt’s and Brondy, a line that would connect the port of Brondy to the farther inland Shrine of Saint Inklethurt. Using extensive labor from the damned the tunnels were constructed, track was laid, and it was opened to the public. With the power of demon binding custom steam trains with minimal smoke were ran through the somewhat ventilated tunnel.  It ran without issue for 5 months before a small seal was broken and the hellfire engine unleashed its true power, acrid hellsmoke filled the tunnel and killed the hundreds of passengers inside. The company that created the rail line and bound the demons quickly went bankrupt and the tunnels were abandoned. All subsequent underground railroads in Troika have been powered by plasmic energy instead. When wand...

CAPERS Star Wars Lifepath

I have been watching Andor as of late and I was reminded of how good I think CAPERS is of a system do do star wars in. So I made a modified version of the lifepath system found in the expanded book to be more suitable to star wars. You can find it here.

Mask 01: Mask of the Iron Warriors

Hello, welcome to a strange thing I am attempting to start. The great magic mask relay. It begins with one person describing a magical mask, it can be for any length and for any setting they wish, it can even have mechanical implications if the writer desires.  Once they have written this, they are going to tag (be polite, ask them if they are fine being tagged in) another person to write a magic mask and this chain continues until 100 masks have been described. They make sure to link to the blogpost you were tagged in and then once the person after you had made their post link to theirs. The blog posts should be formatted as Mask #: Mask Name. That’s pretty much all the rules, make sure the person you tag reads the rules.  EDIT: 11/17/2025. You have probably been linked here by a blog that doesn't follow the rules above, bully them in the comments about it. Mask of the Iron Warrior Back when iron was first forged the warlords of old, conquers of valleys and mountai...

The Hyrule Grand Campaign: Hyrule

Image
I'm slowly working on creating my own legend of zelda themed hex crawl, and I do mean slowly this map was first created september 2022. The basic gist is that it takes place during the Hyrulean Civil War in a "Shot and Sorcery" setting. Matchlock firearms exist Black powder was not invented, instead blue powder (dried and gentle pulverized bombflowers) Kingdoms with fertile land farm bombflowers to fuel their plans of domination. Monsters stalk the hinterlands, making population centers outside of the control of the kingdoms incredibly rare. Ancient technology and malice dot the landscape, if any one kingdom was able to harness these powers they might be able to upset the delicate balance. You can download the keys and character creation rules here This will slowly be updated with more and more stuff as time goes on. This map and project predates the goat reveal of the zonai so idk if I am gonna stick with human zonai or not.

Spelljammer Rules For Dungeon Crawl Classics

Image
I wrote a cleric spell for spelljamming clerics in DCC and technically a spell for wizards but honestly this is just a spelljammer generator alongside a spelljammer randomizer. This document assumes you have access to the spelljammer boxed set already.     If you want to download these as pdfs these can be found here. Special thanks to Blark and Sean.

Spells from Imaro

The Saga of Helane of Thross

Image
I recently did a solo hexcrawl of The Wilderlands of High fantasy using Dungeon Crawl Classics. I ran the game one in game day per real life day. I didn't use any special solo rules, I just used standard Basic Expert encounter procedures and a set of playing cards called into the weird. Let me tell you how things went down.   Day 1 Helane wakes in the middle of the woods. Her head pounds, she doesn't know where she is or what she was doing before hand. Unwilling to die in the woods she begins heading north, finding her way into a grasslands with a river heading east. She sets up camp, 4 rations left. Day 2 As the night went on she noticed light's and smoke from a town directly north of her. Not wishing to ford the river she follows it upstream into the hills. There she finds an adventuring party of 7 or so huddled around a wounded beastman. With uncertainty wracking her she makes contact. Realizing she is a wizard they ask her if she is come from the order of...

Upon the Northern Isthmus: somewhere deep in the woods there is a hole in the ground, and so far neither man nor magician knows what lies below.

The first adventure for the upon the northern isthmus campaign setting has been released. I don't post about it much but it does exist a quite extensively in my brain. You can find it as a free blogpost on my itch.io with downloads of a pdf version being available for purchase. https://500poundsofnothing.itch.io/whatliesbelow

DCC Month of Horror: Day 1 Chains of Hell

Wide-eyed peasants tell tales of horrible chain encrusted creatures, their flesh bleeding as the metal digs deeper and deeper into them.. Chain devils, they chant. They are not entirely wrong. However the bound is not the denizen of hell, the bound in their victim. The chains themselves are what puppet these corpses. Their purpose is inscrutable but their means are simple, kill and puppet a moral victim, kill as many other mortals as they can and drag them back into the pits of hell. When not puppeting a corpse the chains of hell take on the form of a great serpent.
