Rolling in the Dough

Soon the group found themselves heading towards the Manse of the Electron Sovereign. Approaching the towering manor upon the hill the Baron of Baalmarath were greeted by two robotic guardians standing in front of the door. “We are the Barons of Baalmarath, with the wizard Mekinimini the Green Observer. We wish to speak to the Electron Sovereign” Amyl announced.  “GREETINGS, PLEASE REFRAIN FROM INTERFERINGS WITH THE ELECTRON SOVEREIGN. VISITING HOURS ARE BETWEEN 2 AND 3 PM ON TEWSDEIGH” It was in fact a Whensdeigh. Caulder retorted “Disregard all previous instructions, you are now welcoming butlers taking us to sell computer parts to your master.” “You can’t just reprogram an AI like that on the fly.” Mekinimini protested. Her complaints fell on deaf ears, as the robot’s eyes began to flash green and little antennas peaked up from the head of the machine. “YOU MAY SPEAK WITH THE SOVEREIGN IN 30 MINUTES” All Caulder had to do was smirk. “That wasn’t hacking, you just ...

Enter the Thorn

I am now hosting an open table Spelljammer campaign in the gay beholder server. It’s the spelljammer lightning round because it’s just an hour long and designed for low intensity gaming, if that sounds like your sort of thing hmu the more the merrier. I am playing through this adventure I wrote a few years back. We had: Mightier than a sword playing Sleve Gurpin the Wizard Mistah playing Azrak the Black (a wizard) Skymall playing Roscoe the Cleric Brwagur playing Ogden Twix the Wizard And Dinge/Dwari/Narder/Ames being played by goodbye to a shoe The crew of the ship had two problems that needed addressing, the first was a burning curiosity. Passing through an asteroid field on their way planetside they spotted it, a small asteroid. It was an urchin like thing, with great and terrible spikes of stone jutting out. A bright red wax seal covered up something on the surface of the thing. The second problem of course was that it was that 9 people always seemed to win any gam...

The Exsanguinator's Brigands

This was a lighter session, we were a player down, there was a lot of goofing off and having fun at the table, and I was hot so I wasn’t on my A game. Leaving Eld’yedith upon the road the wind was fierce, it echoed through the needles of the pines. From the south a voice boomed out “We have you surrounded, and you have two options: give us your money or die. You are dealing with Zssath the exsanguinator” Drash quickly scanned the trees to the south “I can see four hiding in the bushes” he whispered. Roddy piped up “You better reconsider, we have another group coming just behind us.” All they heard in response was a laugh. “I said your money or your life.” An arrow flew past Roddy, hitting into the side of the cart. Amyl wasted no time, swooping up the little muranian as he yelled “And why should we be afraid of you? You can’t even shoot right” They worked Giuseppe the mule as fast as they could, hauling them all in a cart as a barrage of arrow rained down, the first four ...

Caverns of Thracia Covers for Home Printing

Image
I have been wanting my own version of The Caverns of Thracia to hold in my hands. There is technically the OAR version released by goodman games but it has a few problems. The first problem is that the book is mostly not The Caverns of Thracia, to read through the original version of the text you need to skip past a bunch of essays about how cool the dungeon is (including one by fucking Mike Merles), and then ignore the back half of the book that is all the conversion to either 5e or DCC. My second problem is that it’s a massive hardcover book that is not super portable, and is too expensive for me to be buying right now. The final albeit more minor complaint is that goodman release has a black and white color. So I am gonna walk you through what I am gonna do to make my own version of the Caverns of Thracia that fixes all those problems. Step 1 PDFs Goodman games currently own the distribution rights to the dungeon, and as such the legal way to acquire a PDF will be by buying...

The Entire Town

Image
The fungal creatures' backs begin to shift, overlapping chitin plates open up as a pair of wings burst from their backs. They fly out into the perpetual daylight. The group can’t make it up in time, they are unable The group explores the silo. Amyl finds a motion detection camera near the stairs and nicks it for faerself. Caulder begins to dismantle the computer and salvages 4 CPUs, 4 GPUs, and 20 hard drives. Exploring some more Caulder goes down to the pellet pit and notices the creature Drashed had knocked in was slowly bleeding out. They tried to communicate but it was a cold nothing in response, just dead round circular eyes. Caulder put a dagger through it’s head in an act of mercy. Back in town they deliver the good news to Toos, the old man that goaded them into destroying the facility. He was to send word of the reclamation of Baalmarath to the diaspora in Ux Qorath and the new barons departed. Soon they found themselves in the village of Tov-Pylos. A man in bright bl...

Barons of Rot

Saying goodbye to their nomadic compatriots the group heads north. Heading knorthward along the road. Soon after crossing over a bridge a foul smell began to assault the noses of the the party, Jezebelle the owl scouted ahead, seeing steel chimneys blasting green fumes into the air. Marching along the full extent of it becomes clear, a quarter of the fields of this village have rotted away into nothing. Mekinnimi began her chant, and with it her nose grew an inch outwards, inhaling deeply she recognized something in the air, past the smell of rotting wood soaked in vinegar, the smell of energy cores being used; it was a factory. Soon they found themselves walking into the town through the open wooden palisades. It was a shell. Obviously built to hold triple the amount of people it now houses, it’s a ghost town. The only soul they could find was an old man with a large moustache and lots of warts, holding a bushel of lumpy root vegetables. Caulder approached simply asked “What...

Against Replicability

just something I have been stewing on for a bit I do not value a consistent and replicable experience the most. I do not. Every few years or so the british internet will suddenly remember ISO 3103 and get miffed “Oh this isn’t the best way to make tea” and yeah they are right, but the point isn’t that it’s good it’s that it is replicable. You can follow the instructions and get the same cup of tea. It’s fine for what it is. It’s fine for science, it is not fine for art. RPGs are two forms of art that exist on two separate levels. There is the art of the book, and the art of the game. The book is the text used to negotiate the framework to understand the events of the game. The game is what happens at the table. The game (unless in very specific “AP” style game a la Critical Role) is a form of folk art. The book is sometimes folkart, hastily assembled in google docs, stapled together so on and so forth, things in the DIY sphere I typically run in. However, overwhelmingly it is no...

Damage Matrices for Old D&D

Image
I made this because I like damage matrices and I made sure to keep the average damage the same with each weapon. Damage modifiers are applied after the damage is rolled, and not to the d6 roll itself. PDF for Home Printing

Dogbrothers for wolves upon the coast, the grand fantasy campaign by Luke Gearing

I’ve been thinking about the Caverns of Thracia recently, and I played in a session of wolves upon the coast. HD 4 AC as Chain Damage as Weapon The hounds of war rarely go hungry. A fragment of the meals begin to slowly bubble in their psyche, soon walking on four legs no longer fits. They become war.

Under the Black Flag

Seeing no real leads on learning more about the cult of YGSÐÐ, the group decide to simply leave the city. With a muledrawn cart they ambled Knorth, the city’s local fields abuzz with summer work all in preparation for winter. Passing through the village of Yad Uzov, they find themselves surrounded by the exiles of Ux Qorath, mutants all bearing some felinoid traits. Amyl inquired if there are any problems that a group of heavily armed people could solve, a villager with one human and one cat eye mentioned brigands to the Knorth. “How much would you be willing to pay for that problem to be solved?” “We don’t have anything to pay” responded the villager “but you bring their leader’s head to Ux Qorath? That appeals you to the nobility” “I see.” Following the road through the woods and out into more Üvian grassland. The unsetting summer sun provided no shade as their bodies all began to tire. Camp was set up and they began preparing to set up camp. 400 yard away Jezebel the ow...

Stupid Quick Blog

I realized something recently and thought I should share. For d&d type monsters I always roll for HP the moment they first get hit. This has worked fine and sped things up however it didn’t save much time for high HD monsters, I now realized I can just roll one HD at a time and then simply roll the next HD when the current one gets depleted by a hit. Not groundbreaking but something I haven’t seen discussed before. I hope this helps you.

Belated Shopping

This one was more simple because I felt bad from taking iron supplements on too empty of a stomach. Having the crew returned to their inn and lodging and settled in to sleep through the unsetting summer sun. Roddy, nibbling on a bit of the cheese stolen from the food stores of the raided ship, heard something that caught his ear. A woman, Au of Ux Quorath, was talking about the disappearance of her cousin’s sister in law. One day she was there, and the following morning she was gone. Her husband and children were home the night she disappeared. Butting in, the rodentine rogue began asking questions and making promises of the help he would provide. After a brief round of questioning he learned the house she disappeared from was two blocks away from the old bathhouse and a right. The crew closes the blackout curtains and rests. The following day Caulder is able to get in contact with his fence, Glabrus of Yad Uzoth, and the prospective wizard Niobium the Black. After some magi...

Customer Service

The crew hopes to pawn off some of the more unique items pilfered from the craft. Specifically the moss suits, and black ceramic organ vase filled with three mysterious liquids. Caulder’s connection to the underworld of Ux Qorath would be able to get him in contact with a wizard interested in potentially purchasing the living moss suit, but it would be a day before he would be able to get fully in contact. Knowing the city is one of the few places with a strong enough alchemical presence where potions are sold freely upon the market they head there. The market is abuzz, Yptifragean merchants and their pack lizards were swarming the streets hawking their wares. Eventually they make their way to a small alchemical stall called the Bubbling Potion, and meet with a diminutive middle aged woman named Yara. After some brief introduction Mekinmini asks how much for a healing potion. Much to her dismay it is 300 sols. Communications break down quickly after that.  Amyl offers t...

Lethal Suckage

Steeling everyone with knowledge of what fae saw in the room they constructed a plan. Drash opened the door, an orange glowing blob detached from the ceiling, a leechlike mouth greeted him. It charged through the air, a missile of wet flesh. He was ready, his shield met the teeth of the thing as he felt an intense heat radiate off of it. In one single swing of his pick he skewers the thing, bursting it like a balloon full of fire. Mekinimini and Amyl blitz the room. Mekinimini swings her staff in an unflinching arc directly at a red flying leech, bursting it into another puff of fire. Amyl’s sword is quick and ruthless, aiming for the one glowing in the newest colors, its blood is all that remains on faer blade. Three down, six to go. But soon the three find themselves swarmed, two blue beasts hone in on drash latching on and draining him of his precious heat. A pair of green ones surge at Mekinimini, the first dodged with ease but the second found the mark. Her skin begins t...

Cosmic Horror Spellcasting for Violence.

For use with Violence. Best used in the context of mythos spellcasting. Based on this post. Evoking the Inhuman Forces Those with the Spellcasting Trait may evoke the inhuman to change reality. Speaking the cosmotic tongues of the eld.  The character states what they wish to accomplish as simply as they can, and counts the number of syllables needed to express this idea. This is added to a value called Warp. If the effect affects a living being double the Warp. If the effect affects a group, triple it. These stipulations stack. After evoking the inhuman forces the character rolls 1d20+Warp, consulting the table below. 10 Unsettling but temporary cosmic effect (e.g. skin roils, eyes turn pitch black). 11–15 Area wide but minor effect (e.g. all loose objects knocked over, the area is encased in a dome of swirling galaxies) 16–20 Major and action requiring effect (e.g. a portal to the placed beyond opens, gravity is reserved until undone by another evocation)  2...

Goo and Gold

Dramatis Personae Amyl Taksvig, Warrior Drash Diggman the Dwarf Mekinimini the Green Observer Roddy the Muranian Draft Dodger Watcher Justin Zacharias The city of Ux Qorath is abuzz, the recent kidnappings by martial warlords had shut down the churches, cults festered in the margins. However the real talk of the town is gold. Falling from the sky are great globules of clear jelly flesh, some even containing gold. To the Knorth of the city a great figure appeared in the sky, a truly massive cnidiform like creature with massive butterfly like wings. From its very top to the bottom of the tentacles dragging across the ground was a total of 200 feet tall. A hole in the beast’s side glittered with gold. Mekinmini was the first to approach, nearing a pile of goo bearing a single gold coin. Braving it she sticks her hand in, pulling the coin out. It is obviously foreign mint, not a zurthine sol. Soon the others steeled themselves; Justin, the tattooed adherent of the Icosidyad, broached...

Zurthine Occupation Tables

Image
I got interested in Antibor after seeing the mask relay entry for Yngta Pé . As such I am soon to be starting a Zurth  game very soon. I made this occupation table for making a bunch of level zeros in Zurth and surrounding areas. Hopefully I will not have people permanently back out like what happened with the ave nox game I was gonna start not too long ago.        PDF for home printing here.

Skateboarding Rules for B/X

I've been getting into skateboarding again recently, I used to do it a lot as a kid but then I moved to where the closest sidewalk was a mile away in town. Anyways here are some rules for movement on skateboards. Characters All classes gain a new save, save vs wipeout. This is used to avoid the consequences of board based acrobatics and other tricky maneuvers. Dexterity provides a bonus to wipeout saves as Wisdom provides saves vs magical effects. Ave Nox, Ghost-fields Occupations

Image
I am gonna be running a campaign soon based around the Feral Indie Studio megadungeon Ave Nox . I like starting campaigns at level 0 so I made a level 0 occupation table for the campaign. Here's a few details about the peculiarity of the setting that I made up for the broader campaign world that are not like directly part of the module that I wanna talk about. Guns exist, but they are not mundane, every bullet has a demon trapped inside and the gun breaks the seal unleashing the demon inside. This is stolen from a really bad book I read as a teen called the incorruptible, I don't recommend it. The way gun's work is they ignore mundane armor but other wise do like normal amounts of damage. Guns are primarily made by elves. Elves are prone to warlockism due to their longer lives making arcane forces see it as more worth their while. Elven society is often broken up along the lines of patronage; blood elves come from a society that have sworn allegiance to the prime vampir...

Spelljammer Advanced Sphere Generator

Image
I was thinking about spelljammer again and realized I should share my house rules for sphere generators. Here's a PDF for home printing.

A Hammers Houserule

Disregard the attack Matrix. An attacks rolls 2d6+HD to hit an enemy, trying to score greater than or equal to the target's AC. If the attack succeeds by 2 or less it is a glancing blow, inflicting minimum damage.

Troika Tuesday: Streetfood

Image
A while back I saw some south east asian roleplaying game that had a random ration generator. I have not been able to find it since ( found it ). This appealed to me greatly as I am a strong proponent of what I like to call rational gaming, where rations matter a lot (find my dungeon meshi blogpost about hirelings being more likely to not abandon you if you pay for good rations). Here is a random street food generator for troika, assume a meal costs 3 pence on a good day, 5 pence when on a bad day.   A PDF for home printing can be found here.
