Bending for Troika!

I have recently endeavored to watch the legend of Korra series with a friend. At age 11 I decided to stop watching after season 1 because I considered it to be unbearably conservative. Watching season one again and now at age 26 I am finding it not much better, but whatever. I will keep watching it with friends as long as I get to complain with someone next to me on the couch. I however still find the setting compelling as the show got it’s hooks in me young and it’s cool to see someone move a big rock. I will probably slowly create my own version of the republic city to use in my home games. It would be an Alternative universe set idk like 5 years before the show or something. My go to for this sort of thing would firstly be CAPERS because the 1920s and super powers thing and the elemental control powers found in the supplements so most of the mechanical groundwork has been laid already. However, Troika! often calls to me, the metropolitan flavor of it also seems suited for ...

Troika Tuesday: Sythesizing Explosive

 Earlier today I saw Dan Sell’s explosive rules for Troika! and I really liked them, and wanted to mix in my own rules that I have used for explosives in the past. It's still troika tuesday for me anyways. Explosives have three ranges (Listed in meters); the central, middle, and outer ranges. The victims in the central zone suffer double damage, the middle as normal, and the outer as a -1. Each creature between the blast source and the victim imparts a -1 to damage rolls. Victims suffer double damage if they are in an enclosed space where the shockwave can bounce. | Damage Roll | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7+ | |---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---| | Small Explosion# | 5 | 8 | 8 | 10 | 14 | 17 | 20 | | Modest Explosion# | 3 | 4 | 5 | 5 | 8 | 10 | 14 | | Large Explosion= | 10 | 16 | 24 | 26 | 26 | 30 | 36 | | Gigantic Explosion= | 15 | 20 | 27 | 30 | 33 | 37 | 42 | Grenedoes = Small Explosion, Range 3/6/9. Petard = Modest Explosion, Range 6/12/18 cone. Light Cannon = Larg...

Troika Tuesday: Streetfood

Image
A while back I saw some south east asian roleplaying game that had a random ration generator. I have not been able to find it since ( found it ). This appealed to me greatly as I am a strong proponent of what I like to call rational gaming, where rations matter a lot (find my dungeon meshi blogpost about hirelings being more likely to not abandon you if you pay for good rations). Here is a random street food generator for troika, assume a meal costs 3 pence on a good day, 5 pence when on a bad day.   A PDF for home printing can be found here.

Young Man's Ettiquite Society and the Gold Eel Bridge

The urchins of Troika city have it rough. Dead parents, crushing poverty, constant owl attacks. It’s truly a miserable experience. If by age 6 they are not able to find a job the many factories often times a life of crime is all that’s left. The Young Man’s Etiquette Society is a child gang headed by the infamous 16 year old Hayhead Mirra. Nearly every pick pocketing urchin in the city pledges allegiance to him and his gang. Currently they control the toll to cross the Gold Eel bridge connecting the neighborhood of Brumpton’s Hill and Eelbones. These three are the ones who enforce that 3 pence toll. Limney, 11 year old boy Overly confident and prone to dozing off. Whenever he talks to a bearded man he insists that he just shaved his recently in as deep of a voice as he can muster. Crandle, 12 year old girl The eldest of the group and the one that keeps the coin purse. She is missing part of her ear from a knife fight and makes sure to keep it covered with her hair. She loath...

Saint Inklethurt's and Brondy Underground Railroad

Troika! Tuesday is here again. Here’s a small little monster. Hidden within the goblin labyrinth of Troika City are many abandoned underground projects. The first underground railroad in the city was that of the Saint Inklethurt’s and Brondy, a line that would connect the port of Brondy to the farther inland Shrine of Saint Inklethurt. Using extensive labor from the damned the tunnels were constructed, track was laid, and it was opened to the public. With the power of demon binding custom steam trains with minimal smoke were ran through the somewhat ventilated tunnel.  It ran without issue for 5 months before a small seal was broken and the hellfire engine unleashed its true power, acrid hellsmoke filled the tunnel and killed the hundreds of passengers inside. The company that created the rail line and bound the demons quickly went bankrupt and the tunnels were abandoned. All subsequent underground railroads in Troika have been powered by plasmic energy instead. When wand...

Troika Tuesday Devil in the Crypt

It’s Troika! Tuesday. I ran Devil in the crypt for 3 people in a discord server I am in. We had Vashko the Demon Stalker Jimdon the Gremlin Catcher Ghonnorea the Hogoblin The three of them had heard tell, an ancient tomb of the ascendant of the phoenix throne floating near a traderoute upon the humpbacked sky had had strange occurrences happen, golden barges had been disappearing if they traveled too close. Rumors of devilry caught the attention of Vashko, so he rented a golde barge, and the help of two mercenaries. Or tried to get two mercenaries, he got one and an exterminator. As their barge sailed they scouted three details, a cave waterfall about 30 meters down the side of the floating island, arid shrubland coating most of the island, and a mesa that creates a crescent shaped valley in the middle. After trekking to the valley they gave upon a verdant vale, the road continues onwards for a while curving around palm trees and wind fluttering grass towards the back of the...

Troika House Rule: Weapons

I recently put up a bunch of additional damage matrices for weapons found in traditional fantasy rpgs not in troika as well as stuff like getting hit by trains or caught in explosions up on itch.. I thought I might as well add some weapons related house rules I use for troika to my blog as well. Higher Lethality For those in search of even higher lethality, a player character’s advanced skill is added to their damage rolls. Enemies add a third of their skill to damage rolls. If they are particularly dangerous a half, surprisingly weak a quarter. Dual Wielding The attacker Rolls Vs using the lesser of two Weapon Skills for each weapon. The attack may roll damage with both weapons using a d3. If their secondary weapon is used primarily for riposting, then initiated Roll Vs attacks are made with the primary weapon Skill, non-initiated Rolls Vs use the secondary weapon Skill. The attack may roll damage with the primary weapon as normal.

Longshot City: Loose Cannon

Some wires got crossed, or maybe you just drew poorly. Regardless, your powers are always on, despite how convenient it would be to turn them off. If the origin requires equipment you also need that equipment to live or cannot remove it for other reasons. Advanced Skills 3 Hand to Hand Fighting 2 Stealth Possessions A shockingly fragile power inhibitor. Special: Activating your powers has no Stamina cost, as they are always active. Variations: Life Drainer. Your very touch is anathema to life, gain Absorb Stamina (Power). Dynamo. Your body is constantly producing blasts of uncontrollable energy, gain Energy Blast (Power 3). Radiant Energy. You are constantly radiating off intense energy, gain Elemental Form (Power 4). Uncontrollable Strength. You are strong, too strong, gain Superstrength (Power 4). However you must test your luck ever...
